Bing For iPhone, Now With Added Social Search And Google Goggles-Like Feature

Microsoft has just released an updated version of the Bing for iPhone app (iTunes link), and it brings two major goodies.

The first is a Google Goggles-like feature for visual scanning of certain objects, and secondly come search enhancements that take the engine beyond traditional searching to include status updates from your social graph.

In a blog post, Bing for Mobile group product manager Justin Jed writes about the new features.

Adobe Starts Shipping Flash Player 10.1 for Mobile – Let The Real Testing Begin

About 7 months after the release of Flash Player 10.1 (beta), Adobe has today announced it has shipped its mobile sister to partners worldwide.

Adobe unveiled a beta version of Flash Player for Android about a month ago, but has been dabbling with bringing Flash to mobile devices – including Android handsets – for much, much longer.

Make no mistake about it: Adobe really needs to get this completely right.

Windows Live Messenger For iPhone Available Now … But Not Everywhere

Noticed first by The Next Web and Redmond Pie, looks like the Windows Live Messenger app for iPhone has just hit the App Store – but it only landed in certain regions (iTunes link), just like Microsoft’s Bing for iPhone app.

Update: commenters say it’s also live in the UK, Canada and France stores.

People in Belgium (myself) and other regions are currently only able to download Microsoft’s two other applications, Seadragon and Tag Reader.

Airbnb Founder Eats His Own Dogfood, Goes ‘Homeless’ For Months

Gotta respect startup founders who know how to really eat their own dogfood: Airbnb co-founder and CEO Brian Chesky last week moved out of the 3 bedroom apartment that was the driving force behind the establishment of the company back in 2007 (and still serves as its main office), and will be ‘living on Airbnb’ until at least the end of the year.

Chesky will be using Airbnb, which is a marketplace aimed to connect travelers with people who have some room for accommodation to spare, to find places in San Francisco to stay for 2-3 nights in the next couple of months.

Updated Rdio iPhone App Makes Its Way To The App Store

It took Apple’s review team close to a month, but the update to the Rdio iPhone application is now finally available from the App Store (iTunes link).

It’s unclear why it took Apple this long, considering the update merely fixes some software bugs and adds one minor feature (remembering which song you were playing when you last closed the app).

Muziic Has Streamed 250 Million Music Videos To Date, But Will It Last?

We haven’t posted anything about online music and video streaming service Muziic so far, although I’ve been aware of its existence for a while (it has bagged a lot of media coverage since its debut in March 2009 and with the release of the fun Muziic DJ tool).

The small, self-funded, father-son start up based in a small Iowa town offers its streaming service on a wide variety of platforms, including a Web player, desktop software client, Facebook, iPhone and iPad apps and more.

Questions about its legality abound, but it sure has been successful in finding an audience: the company recently added a counter to its main website showing the number of streams to date. Today, the total number of streams has surpassed a grand total of 250 million plays.

Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff Uses Twitter To Announce Execution

A sign of the times, although many may find it distasteful, or much worse: Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff used a mobile Twitter client to send out a tweet announcing the impending execution by firing squad of convicted murderer Ronnie Lee Gardner.

As the BBC notes, quite a modern way to announce a very old-fashioned death.

Apptera Raises Another $10 Million For Its Voice & Visual Mobile Advertising Network

Mobile advertising company Apptera has raised another $10 million in VC funding, we’ve learned via an SEC filing. The startup’s previous financing round dates back to November 2008, also totaled about $10 million and came from investors such as Alloy Ventures, Lightspeed Venture Partners and Walden International.

The company has yet to publicly disclose the new capital injection, but these types of follow-on rounds typically come from existing backers, with maybe one or two additional investors.

comScore Cans Former AOL Exec Eric Bosco After 5 Months On The Job

On January 13, we reported that former AOL SVP of Global Products and U.S. Operations Eric Bosco had departed the company after nearly 14 years to join the comScore management team as Chief Product Officer.

Five months later, he’s out the door, we’ve now learned.

Bosco, who was hired to oversee all of comScore’s global product development efforts, will be departing the audience measurement company at the end of the month. You can find comScore CEO Magid Abraham’s memo after the jump.

Japanese e-commerce giant Rakuten this morning announced that it is buying France’s e-commerce website operator PriceMinister for about €200 million, reports the Wall Street Journal.

The news comes less than a month after word got out that Rakuten moved to acquire US-based Buy.com for approx. the same price ($250M).

Worlize Is Building A User-Generated Social Gaming Platform, Raises Funding

Worlize is kicking off the private beta of what it calls the first user-created social gaming and chat platform for Facebook and other social networks. The service will be kept under wraps until the public launch in Fall 2010, but you can head to the website now to sign up for the public beta release.

The fledgling company has secured about $150,000 in angel funding from private individuals ‘across the gaming and technology spectrum’, including CFO Greg Diller, and is currently raising a more significant Series A round of financing to gear up for launch.
